What is the Baby Food Diet?
Incarnations of this diet fad have been around for years, at times used by people on doctor-mandated bland diets. I remember my dad sometimes eating apple sauce and pureed foods in preparation for medical examinations. The latest version of the Baby Food Diet consists of eating 14 jars of baby food a day. A jar of baby food contains anywhere from 15 to 110 calories, so a dieter gets between 600 to 1500 calories a day, no chewing required. The diet doesn’t include an exercise plan.
Who Created this Diet?
The current Baby Food Diet was created by celebrity trainer Tracy Anderson, whose clientele has included Jennifer Aniston, Gwyneth Paltrow and Madonna. Anderson started taking dance classes as a child. According to her website, Anderson researched her diet plan for more than 10 years, creating a plan to help women get into shape. Supposedly, eating baby food for at least a two-week period cleanses the body.
Baby food has its advantages. It contains vitamins and mineral while eliminating food additives, seasonings and spices. Several baby foods companies, including Gerber’s, produce organic varieties of their foods. Of course, since they come in jars, you can carry them in your purse or leave them in your work desk. Dieters lose up to 10 pounds in a week.

The disadvantage of this diet is the potential of not consuming enough calories, vitamins, protein or other nutrients. Remember, these foods were designed to meet the caloric needs of babies and toddlers. Like most fad diets, the Baby Food Diet concentrates on one kind of food. The American Heart Association says quick-fix diets “violate the first principle of good nutrition: eat a balanced diet that includes a variety of food…These diets are so monotonous and boring that it’s almost impossible to stay on them for a long period.” While dieters may loss lots of weight, they are more likely to gain weight when returning to real food. On a personal note, it’s a little embarrassing to eat baby food at work or a public place.
